HOW TO APPLY
W.K. Kellogg Foundation's
Woodrow Wilson
Michigan Teaching Fellowship
Testing Requirements
Q: Are any tests required as part of the application to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation's Woodrow Wilson Michigan Teaching Fellowship?
A: No tests are required to apply. However, candidates are strongly encouraged to take the MTTC Basic Skills test prior to beginning the program.
Q: What tests are required for teacher certification? Is there a fee?
A: The MTTC Basic Skills test is a pre-professional skills test used by Michigan as a minimum standard for teacher licensure. The test measures very basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, but does not require any knowledge of teaching, pedagogy, K-12 education systems, or curriculum standards. Fellows will be expected to pass the exam during the first summer semester in the program if they have not submitted passing scores prior to enrollment. The fee for the basic skills test is $48.
In addition to the Basic Skills test, candidates for secondary-level teaching certificates must pass the appropriate subject-area test for each academic subject area in which you are to be certified. Candidates seeking certification in more than one field of study must take the subject-area test for each field.
Subject-area tests correspond to teaching certificate endorsements; it is important to verify with your university advisor the endorsement or endorsements for which your institution will apply on your behalf and take the appropriate MTTC tests. The fee for the first subject area test is $73.
Q: How and where do I take the MTTC test? Are there any other exams I will have to take?
A: The following chart details both the paper-based and computer-based MTTC test dates for 2011-2012. For more information view the flyer and/or visit the MTTC website. In planning to take the MTTC test, please bear in mind that you must register in advance of the date on which you plan to take the test.
While candidates are strongly encouraged to take the MTTC, no exams are required for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation's Woodrow Wilson Michigan Teaching Fellowship application.

Q: How do I order a score report for the MTTC test? Where should my scores go?
A: Official score reports can be ordered at the time of registration for up to three institutions. In all cases, please be sure to send your scores to the Foundation and to your preferred partner universities by selecting the appropriate code during the registration process. Scores are also automatically sent to the MDE.

Q: When/how will I receive my scores?
A: Score mailing dates are listed on the test dates page of the MTTC site. In most cases, your official score report will be sent to you by U.S. mail approximately one month after you have taken the test.
Unofficial scores are available on the Internet for a two-week posting period. To access these unofficial scores, you must provide your date of birth and ID number (found on your admission ticket and/or e-mail registration confirmation). For security reasons, you may view your scores only once.
Q: Once I have taken the MTTC Basic Skills Test, how can I determine whether my scores meet state cutoffs for teacher licensure?
A: Test takers receive a separate score for each section of the Basic Skills test and must pass all three sections (writing, reading, and mathematics) to meet the MDE's minimum licensure requirements. For the Basic Skills test only, once you have passed a section, you will never have to take that section again.
The MDE has established that a passing test score on each section of the MTTC test must be 220 or higher.
