About Eastern Michigan University

Eastern Michigan University is a comprehensive university with its main campus in Ypsilanti. Its student population is approximately 23,000. The Princeton Review has named EMU one of the Best Midwestern Colleges for seven consecutive years. Founded in 1849 as Michigan State Normal School, it was originally focused on preparing teachers, and this continues to be a strength: one of every four teachers in Michigan earned his or her degree at Eastern Michigan University. The institution became Eastern Michigan College in 1956, and Eastern Michigan University in 1959. Today, EMU offers more than 200 majors and minors in five colleges, plus the Honors College. Its $90 million Science Complex, currently under construction, is the largest project in University history.

Teacher Preparation at EMU

The first “normal school” established west of the Alleghenies and the sixth in the nation, Eastern Michigan University has been the largest producer of educational personnel in the country since 1991. The EMU College of Education offers a comprehensive range of programs—bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, and extensive non-degree and certification learning experiences—and focuses particularly around specialties in teacher education, special education and leadership and counseling.
