The Frank E. Taplin, Jr. Public Intellectual Award recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to public cultural and intellectual life. The award is named in memory of longtime Woodrow Wilson Trustee Frank Taplin, who exemplified the Foundation’s ideals. + View Recipients

On Wednesday June 12, 2013 at the Harvard Club of New York, at its biennial awards dinner, the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation will present the Frank E. Taplin, Jr. Public Intellectual Award to Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director of The Earth Institute, Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development, and Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University. Professor Sachs, considered to be one of the world’s leading experts on economic development and the alleviation of poverty, is also a senior United Nations advisor, a bestselling author, and a syndicated columnist.

Thomas H. Kean former Governor of New Jersey, will receive the Woodrow Wilson Medal for Distinguished Service to Education at the June dinner. Governor Kean was widely recognized for his leadership when he served as Chairman of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, widely known as the 9/11 Commission. He also served as president of Drew University for 15 years. Throughout his career, Governor Kean has been a strong advocate for excellence and equity in teaching and education.
