Neil Roberts (Brown University ’98) teaches Africana Studies and Political Theory at Williams College is a proud alum of Brown University’s Mellon program. As a political theorist, Neil’s courses are unconventional: Rastafari: Dread, Politics, Agency; Fugitive Democratic Theory: Douglass, Davis, Obama; and Hip Hop and Philosophy to name a few. By bridging Africana thought, political philosophy, and theory, Neil’s courses and scholarship challenge us to rethink the meanings of freedom, agency, and democracy as well as the mediums chosen to study politics.

Neil is co-editor of the CAS Working Papers Series in Africana Studies and Creolizing Rousseau, writes on Sylvia Wynter, and is the recent guest editor of a Theory & Event symposium on the Trayvon Martin case. His books, A Political Companion to Frederick Douglass and Freedom as Marronage are under contract with the University Press of Kentucky and University of Chicago Press.
